Web02 Server Migration 30/04/10: Updated

We are now centralising our servers into BlueSquare (BSQ) data centre, located just outside the M25 in Maidenhead. We have planned the server migration of this server for as little disruption to your website and email services as possible, however please pay attention to the following points:

Affected Server: web02.markethosting.net : 91.204.208.96

Date: Friday 30th April 2010 Sunday 2nd May 2010
Time: 23:00 BST (GMT +1)
Duration: ~2hrs ~3hrs
Impact: Minimal

As we are moving your account to a server in a new data centre, the IP address of the server will be changing to 194.110.243.165. Though the server name web02.markethosting.net will be staying the same. The server migration is going to be a complete replica off the old server, so you won't notice any changes after the migration. When the hosting accounts have transferred over, we will update our name servers with your websites new IP. Any manual modifications you've made to your DNS records will remain unaffected.

DNS propagation

Your internet provider's DNS servers will cache the IP of the old server for anywhere between 2-24 hours, so when you visit your website (or download email) you may go to the old server instead of the new server for a period of time.

If you have a database driven website, to eliminate the effect of DNS propagation on your live database, the old server will have remote database access to the new server. Once we have successfully transferred your hosting account to the new server, we can modify the database settings in your websites configuration files in order to connect to your database on the new server that has just been transferred over. All we would need to do in your database configuration file is change the Database Host from 'localhost' to the new IP address '194.110.243.165'. If you would like us to perform this action, please contact us containing the path of your configuration file(s) you want modifying (eg. /username/public_html/config.php).

To prevent DNS propagation issues with email, we will synchronise the email sent to the old server with your email account on the new server, to ensure no email is lost.

A white-label version of this notice is available at http://www.flavourstatus.net/ which you are welcome to send or point your customers to. This status blog will be updated throughout the migration.

Dedicated IPs

Clients with dedicated IP addresses (eg. for use with SSL certificates) will be automatically assigned to a new IP address within the 194.110.243.xxx range, and their DNS record adjusted accordingly.

01/05/10 12:00 Update

Unfortunately due to severe delays with the data centre engineers connecting us to remote access to prepare these servers to go online, we weren't able to start the migration at 23:00. This server began the migration at approximately 04:00 and finished the data transfer by approximately 07:00. At which point we were experiencing some software issues on the server.

Due to the very late start, at this time we were finishing off the migration of other servers which were planned to be complete by the start of this server's migration. This meant we did not have time to start looking into the software issues until several hours after the migration was complete.

We have decided it's best to postpone the completion of this server migration until Sunday 2nd May @23:00 BST.

Although this delay should not have created any problems or disturbance to your hosting service, please do accept our sincere apologies for any inconvenience this has caused.
